Shelby County R-IV School Board Gets Update on Potential District Split

The Shelby County R-IV School Board heard different options from architect Martin Meyer and representatives from L.J. Hart during its regular school board meeting on Wednesday, April 11 in the high school commons area.
   Potential Boundary
   Situation
Larry Hart of L.J. Hart spoke to the board about the potential boundary issue and how it would affect the new elementary school project. Larry Hart noted that a memorandum from the Mickus O’Tool Law Firm stated that the levy that has been approved has been approved by the entire Shelby County R-IV School District. The building was approved to be paid for from that levy. So regardless of what happens with the boundary change, the levy that was voted there would be levied on all the properties within the existing district until the lease is paid off. Which would mean even if those patrons wanting to join the Macon School District, there would still be a 73 cent levy on their property to make these lease payments for the 20 year duration. That’s not crystal clear from the memo, and DESE may have a different twist to it but this is the way I think it would turn out,” Hart said.
He added that the GEO Bonds are pretty clear cut that the debt stays with the taxing entity until the debt is paid off.
He said there is no identical situation like this on the books. If there was it could be more easily translated.
