The Shelby County R-IV School Board opened up a discussion of future options and planning for the district during its regular school board meeting on Wednesday, May 10 at the middle school library.
   Elementary Situation
Shelby County R-IV’s elementary situation came up again for discussion. The district had tried to build a new elementary school a couple of years ago but taxpayers voted against the measure.
The R-IV Board took a look at the numbers for the elementary students in both schools and began talks about options of what could be done to run the district more efficiently.
The discussion began with the look at enrollments. That is the main thing driving the discussion at this point. Maddex said that when they look at the 2017-18 expectation enrollment for Pre-K and Kindergarten at Clarence, it is a bit concerning. The board talked about what the costs are involved. Maddex explained that it costs more to educate a student in Clarence than it does in Shelbina. He said the numbers are about the same, but the students are a lot less in Clarence. “We’re predicting next year that Clarence will have 88 students and Shelbina will have 242. The elementaries combined are expected to drop 24 students from this year to next year, with a drop of three kids in Shelbina from 245 this year to 242 next year. And a drop in Clarence of 21 students from 109 this year to 88 next year.

Maddex went out and got bleacher bids to repair the football bleachers on the home (north) side of the South Shelby football field. The cost to repair the existing bleachers was going to be roughly $127,000. Maddex said that new bleachers are roughly $133,000. That excludes any concrete work.
Maddex received word from the insurance company that it is willing to pay for the renovations, which is up to $127,000. “Then we’re going to look at, as a board, do we want to spend the extra few thousands to get an entire set of new home bleachers.
