Two-Vehicle Accident Results in a Fatality

A two-vehicle accident resulted in a fatality around 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21, on Route 156 at Route E in Newark.
   According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 60-year-old Michael W. Varner of LaBelle died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.
   The patrol said a 1999 Buick Park Avenue, driven by Varner, attempted to cross Route 156, and failed to yield to a 1998 Kenworth V900 Semi Truck driven by Joshlin R. Yoder, 37, of Leonard.

This is the first of a two-part series looking back at the events that took place in Shelby County in 2016.
   Janaury 6, 2016
   After months of paperwork and red tape, Shelbina’s Demolition grant was approved. Actual demolition didn’t begin until later.

   Janaury 13, 2016
   Slick snowy conditions were the cause of a one-vehicle accident a half mile east of Lakenan on Highway 36. Ashley M. Neeley of Jamesport suffered moderate injuries.
   Carolyn Botkin was recognized with the local Charter Member Salute and the National Delta Star.
   South Shelby FFA Members volunteer at the Shelbina Food Pantry.

   Janaury 27, 2016
   A small group of concerned citizens attended the Jan 26. Shelbina City Council meeting to talk about the City’s idea of upgrading lights and meters. There was skepticisim.
   Ethan Decker of Shelbina took the time to talk with the Shelbina Weekly about his football career at Truman State University.

   February 3, 2016
   Jeanette Poore of United State Bank presented a donation to the Shelby County R-IV School District in the amount of $127.40 as part of the school spirit debit card program.
   Shelbina Police Chief Jerry Fenton presented framed certificates to South Shelby Middle School Secretary Kim McKenzie and Principal Caleb Van Dyke for taking the initiative and checking on a student who was absent from school, and turned out needed medical attention.

   February 10, 2016
   The Shelbina City Council had more discussion on the city improvement project during its regular meeting on Feb. 9.
   South Shelby softball player Whitney Fountain signed her letter of intent to attend school and play ball at John Wood Community College in Quincy.

   February 17, 2016
   The 2016 South Shelby Courtwarming Queen was Myah Wegman, daughter of Nicole Wegman and Clint Wegman.
   The Salt River Ambulance District released plans to build a new ambulance base in Shelbyville.
   The Shelby County R-IV School Board approved a bond resolution for the new FFA building, weight room, band and music room projects.

The Shelbina Police Department honored two Shelbina Elementary Students for their citizenship skills by taking them on a shopping spree. One boy and one girl was chosen.
