The Shelbina City Council discussed the practicality of putting in a sidewalk from the four-way stop at Center Street, going east along the north side of East Walnut, to the Hawkins Theater during Tuesday night’s regular council meeting.
   Possible Sidewalk
   Project
Council members revisited discussions on the possible sidewalk project from the four-way stop to the Hawkins Theater.
It was stated that the project would qualify for a grant with the state. It would most likely be an 80/20 match grant with the City coming up with 20 percent of the total cost.
It was also noted that since it was part of the right-of-way owned by MoDOT, the City would have to get approval from MoDOT prior to submitting for the grant. Shelbina City Superintendent Dennis Klusmeyer said that would not be a big deal to get that approval from MoDOT. He noted that the City has to do this on any project that relates to MoDOT right-of-way.
Council member John Smith said he has heard some negative feedback from the public pertaining to the proposed project. He said that what he is hearing is that people would rather see whatever money is planned to be used for the sidewalk to be put towards the streets instead.
Council member and Mayor Al Dimmitt agreed that they needed to find out more information about this project and what the cost would be before making any further decisions. The issue was tabled until the next meeting.
