Salt River Ambulance District Sets its Sights on Building a New Ambulance Base Facility

The Salt River Ambulance District is hoping that a vision it has had for about the last five or so years will begin to become a reality very soon. According to Salt River Ambulance District Administrator Keith Panteleo, they are hoping to break ground on a new ambulance base sometime this spring.
The current base, which was formerly a lumber yard until 1992 in Shelbyville, is worn out. It has been added on, modified and cobbled over the years to the point where it’s an outdated old facility that is in desperate need to be replaced. Located northwest of the square in Shelbyville, the new structure will sit just north of the existing facilty.
Pantaleo said the current office quarters are much to cramped with the two ladies who work in that spot, along with file cabinets and other things. Pantaleo’s office, which is not that big, also crowds the area where the ladies work.
Pantaleo said they had looked at a possible relocation within the county for the ambulance base. This was based on population and other aspects. “If we could have moved a little farther south and stayed on the highway we could have improved on some areas and lost some on other areas. But we would have had to purchase land and improve the site and that would have driven our costs up. So the board decided to stay where we are,” he explained.

The Shelby County R-IV School Board approved a bond resolution to move to the next step in its major building project that will take place at South Shelby. This was done during the regular board meeting that was held in the middle school library on Wednesday, Feb. 10.

   Resolution
L.J. Hart presented some detailed information about the new building project during a bond resolution hearing prior to the regular meeting. During the regular portion of the meeting, the board passed a motion by a 5-2 vote (with David Ridgely and Scott Gough voting no) to approve the issuance of lease certificates of participation in the aggregate stated principal amount of $1,046,000 in order to provide funds to pay the costs of the project. Documents were then signed.
Maddex gave an update on the project. He said that they’ve had people out drilling and taking soil samples. Jason Becker of California, MO is going to be the general contractor on the project. He met with Maddex, Deacon Windsor, Rob Wilt, Tim Hercules and Tim Larrick and talked about the areas to work out details on the project. He said when they left that day he felt everyone had a better understanding of what is going on. Maddex said he is hoping they get started on the structure sometime in March.
