The First Substantial Snow

Maddex Tells R-IV School Board the Expansion Project is Moving Forward

The Shelby County R-IV School Board received an update it on the latest developments with its project that will result in a new FFA building, as well as a relocated weight room and band and music room, during its regular board meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 13 in the middle school library.
   Update on the Board’s
   Big Project
   Maddex reported that a transformer that needed to be moved over Christmas break was moved. He said the process went very quickly and it was done within two days. New lines have been put in place.
   Maddex said he met with CTS last week and a couple of local contractors so they can finalize their final bids. Maddex said if the numbers are close, they would go with the local contractors, but if they are 25 to 30 percent higher, they need to go with the best bid.
   Maddex said he was meeting on a conference call with L.J. Hart, to update them on where the district is financially. He said things are moving forward.
   He also noted that they vacated a gas line that hasn’t been used for years. Maddex said there would be no use for that line in the band room.
   Principals Reports
   Clarence Elementary Principal Kelly Williams reported that students have started employment for the first time as Leader In Me employees for the third quarter. She said they are excited about their jobs and being good leaders.
   She also noted how the Seven Habits have been incorperated and are helping students with positive behavior at school.
   The COPE group will be having movie nights on Jan. 22 and 29 at Clarence Elementary.
   Williams gave Shelbina Elementary Principal Katie Stueve’s report in her absence. She reported that Jorja Focht earned the Awesome Artist Design award which was a competition through Chariton Valley. Her design will be on the Chariton Valley telephone book, and she will be interviewed and featured on CVTV on Feb. 1 and YouTube on Feb. 8.
   On Jan. 14, representatives from Macon Elementary came to Shelbina Elementary to learn more about the Leader in Me program. It was a very positive visit for both Macon and Shelbina.
   On Jan. 27, there will be Leader in Me coaching taking place with Paul Pitchford, the District’s Leader In Me Coach.
   On Feb. 4, Shelbina and Clarence Elementary teachers are meeting at Clarence for a School Improvement Day. Teachers will be working on what they need to do the rest of the year for studetns to be successful.
   South Shelby Middle School Principal Caleb Van Dyke reported that they are working on Google Classroom, which is an online classroom that they are looking to utilize more in the future.

Methamphetamine Bust in Shelbina Results in the Arrest of Six People; More Charges are Pending

A drug bust at 400 East Walnut in Shelbina revealed two teenagers in the home unconscious and unresponsive, a meth lab and other drug paraphernalia, on Wednesday, Jan. 13.
   According to Shelbina Police Chief Jerry Fenton, a 13-year-old male juvenile was found unconscious in the home along with 19-year-old Reva Baugher. They were transported by Salt River Ambulance to Moberly Regional Medical Center.
   According to Fenton, representatives from South Shelby Middle School called the police department concerned about the 13-year-old not being in school. Officer Cole Hinshaw did a well being check at the home located at 400 East Walnut. Hinshaw knocked on the door and did not get a response. Finally upon entrance of the home he found the two people unconscious and unresponsive. Fenton noted that there were other people in the house when Hinshaw was knocking.
